Commercial shampoos and conditioners contain a variety of ingredients such as plant oils, pro-vitamin, acidic compounds, plastics, stabilizers, thickeners, emulsifiers and fragrances. Over time, these form layers of built-ups over the hair thus causing the hair to lose its lustre and shine. Hair also feels sticky or gummy or may be more prone to tangling. |

Damage to the hair is usually caused by:
* Heat (from irons, blow drying, curlers, lamps etc.
* UV rays (sun-light)
* Mechanical devices (combs, brushes, curling, iirons etc.)
* Chemicals (colouring, rebonding, perms, relaxers etc.)

Chemical alterations like perming, colouring, should only affect the hair above the scalp
but sometimes the hair roots are damaged.
Hair processes of colouring, dyeing or bleaching are adding pigment to or removing pigment from the hair shaft.
Those chemicals cause the cuticle of the hair to be opened so that the colour change can take place within the cuticle. The structure of the hair is being altered, damaging the cuticle or internal structure of the hair, leaving it dry, weak, or prone to breakage. After the hair processing, the cuticle may not fully close, which results in coarse hair or an accelerated loss of pigment.
Generally, the lighter the chosen colour from one’s original hair colour, the stronger the reaction..
Perms and relaxation using relaxers or thermal reconditioning involve chemical alteration of the internal structure of the hair in order to affect its curliness or straightness. Here again, hair quality is affected.
Sun damage can oxidise fatty acids from the hair leaving it very dry and brittle.
